National School Sport Week: the work continues

Tuesday, 18 November 2008

National School Sport Week 2007Earlier this year schools throughout the country celebrated PE and school sport with the first ever National School Sport Week (NSSW). And what a momentous week it was! Up to three million young people took part, raising the profile of PE and school sport at a local and national level.

Six months on, we spoke to Nick Robb, Partnership Development Manager from Ellis Guilford School and Sports College in Nottingham, about the impact National School Sport Week has had on his area.

YST: How have you sustained the enthusiasm generated through NSSW?
NR: We have continued and expanded our school sport calendar of events and leagues providing opportunities for high quality competition in a range of 16 different sports and activities.

YST: Have pupils wanted to engage more in PE and sport since NSSW?
NR: Our key focus in NSSW was our City Olympics event and this has certainly inspired those competitors to engage in further sport and activity.

YST: Ultimately, what impact has NSSW had on your partnership?
NR: NSSW provides a catalyst and focus for school sport and enables the School Sport Partnership and individual schools  to showcase all that is good in PE and sport as well as for us to position some of our high profile events in a national focus week.

YST: What are your plans for NSSW 2009?
NR: We will be running our City Olympics City wide event as well as every school in the School Sport Partnership having a sport and physical activity focus week.

The next National School Sport Week takes place from 29 June to 3 July 2009. Undoubtedly it will be another week to remember! Keep watching this space...
