school sportThe National PE and School Sport Professional Development programme is managed by the Consortium Management Group which consists of Youth Sport Trust, Association for PE (AfPE) and Sports Coach UK (scUK). It was established in 2003 and strives to improve the quality of teaching, coaching and learning in PE and School Sport.

The programme aims to support the implementation of the high level targets within the overall Physical Education, School Sport strategy for Young People (PESSYP) outlined by the DCSF. The programme forms one of the strands of the PESSYP national strategy and is designed to provide a tool for the Local Authority and PESSCL infrastructure of Specialist Sports Colleges and School Sports Partnerships to meet their aims in delivering the five hour offer.

The objectives of the programme, as part of the five hour offer, are to:

  • Raise the quality of teaching and learning in PE and School Sport within and beyond the curriculum, to raise pupils’ attainment.
  • Improve the understanding of how high quality PE and School Sport can be used as a tool for whole school improvement – particularly in terms of behaviour management, attendance, and attainment.
  • Improve the understanding of how high quality PE and School Sport can be used to support healthy lifestyles and physical activity.
  • Encourage more innovative interpretation of the PE Programme of study to meet the needs of all pupils to enhance achievement.
  • Enhance cross phase continuity to improve pupils; progress.
